Weaving programme empowers 100 Orang Ulu women to be master artisans, entrepreneurs

KUCHING, Aug 22: A specialised weaving programme has been launched to provide skills and training for 100 Orang Ulu women in Bario, Lawas, Sg Asap, Tubau, and Miri.

According to a press release, the programme was made possible by the Sarawak Business Federation's (SBF) Revovery BizFund and organised by the Orang Ulu Chamber of Commerce & Industry (OUCCI) - a member of the Federation.

SBF Reovery Bizfund co-chair, Anne Kung, visited and witnessed the weaving workshops held from Aug 16 to 18, accompanied by OUCCI member Lohong Tajang and a team.

"We hope to train new weavers to become master artisans and entrepreneurs to help create a livelihodd strategy from centuries-old traditions. Not to mention these crafts are functional and beautiful too," said Kung in the press release.

The training workshops, which are now in progress, will take a month to complete.

Aside from the weaving programme, the SBF Recovery BizFund offers more than 40 other courses to train and reskill its members, and the range is vast, from digitalisation, patisserie, hospitality, construction certification, and more.

Over 2,000 participants have been trained under the Recovery BizFund programme.

SBF also expressed appreciation to the Sarawak government for the RM20 million grant, which aims to improve skildd and retrain workers in the State based on industry needs.
